The Cancellation Debacle: Why I'd Want Humans to Stay on TV

There's a certain series on Netflix titled Lost in Space, which is almost a remake of the original 1960s series. While they share the names of the characters, that's about it. However, if there's one show I wish hadn't been cancelled, it's that one. From the big-budget special effects that rival any blockbuster movie to the intricate and intelligent writing, it's easily the best science fiction series I've ever had the privilege of watching. Unfortunately, it was missed by the network after just a few seasons.

But when it comes to TV shows that I wish could be resurrected, my top choice would undoubtedly be Humans. This British sci-fi series, which aired from 2015 to 2018, delves into a society where advanced technology has created sentient robots that serve as humans in various roles. The show is characterized by a thoughtful narrative and a star-studded cast that brings the story to life in a manner that captivates the audience. The narrative is full of intriguing and complex characters, each with their own unique perspectives and challenges.

Besides the cast, the soundtrack by Cristobal Tapia de Veer adds to the immersive experience of the series. It's not just a classic that blends science fiction with intricate storytelling; it's also a show that raises controversial questions about synthetic intelligence. Issues such as the autonomy of robots and the moral implications of creating sentient beings are explored in depth. For viewers, this not only provides an engaging storyline but also opens up a dialogue about the ethical considerations of advanced technology in society. I believe that with a few more seasons, Humans could have become a quintessential series that would stand the test of time.

It's disheartening to think about how a show like Humans, which is both intelligent and thought-provoking, could be cut short. The show's exploration of what it means to be human in a world where there are sentient robots is a topic that continues to resonate. Even if the show was rushed to a conclusion, the impact it had on its audience suggests it had a staying power that could have been exploited with proper development and attention. The themes it explores are relevant and timely, and they continue to spark discussions about the future of technology and ethics.

Every time I watch a rerun of Seinfeld, I find something new to laugh about, even with the episodes I've seen numerous times already. However, when it comes to a show that rivals my attachment to Seinfeld, it's not Lost in Space or Humans. It's the 1990s remake of Dark Shadows. This series was so well-made and engrossing, yet it was prematurely cancelled after only a few months. As a show that combines sexiness, suspense, and scariness, it left a lasting impression on me that has endured for over 30 years, making the decision to cancel it completely incomprehensible to me even today.

In conclusion, these are the shows I would like to see remain on television—whether through reboots, remakes, or simply continued series. While cancelations are a part of the television industry, it's worth reflecting on the impact certain shows can have on their audiences and the lessons they can provide. If the creators and networks can learn to appreciate the value of these shows, perhaps the television landscape would be a much richer and more diverse universe to explore.
