How Books and Movies Have Altered My Life: Reflections and Insights

From an early age, books and movies have been powerful tools that shape our perceptions and beliefs. They can plant seeds of wisdom, impart valuable life lessons, and even alter our behavior. In this article, I will explore some of the books and movies that had a significant impact on my life, particularly the movie Jaws and the book The Great Santini.

The Power of Media

Media, such as books and movies, can have a profound impact on our subconscious beliefs and behaviors. The movie Jaws, for instance, demonstrated the power of perceptual bias. It had such a significant impact on me that for years, I would swim in a freshwater lake anxiously, believing that the danger portrayed in the film was real. This illustrates how films can influence our perception of reality.

One of the most impactful forms of literature is the Bible. For many, it is a holy scripture that provides guiding principles for life. Personally, I've found that reading the Bible and following the teachings of Jesus Christ has brought me peace, hope, and joy. My personal relationship with Him has evolved over time, and I find that it helps me navigate the challenges of life with greater emotional resilience.

The Impact of ‘Hachiko’

One of the most powerful movies that I have ever watched is Hachiko. This emotional film made me cry, and I believe it was because of my deep affection for animals. The movie tells the story of Hachiko, a faithful dog who waited every day for his owner to return from work at the Shibuya Train Station in Japan. His unwavering loyalty and love for his owner touched my heart in a profound way. It taught me about the power of loyalty and the importance of making deep connections with living creatures.

At the time, I was in Navy flight training, and I read the book The Great Santini. One particular quote from the book has stayed with me for years and has significantly influenced my leadership abilities. The book contrasts Captain Santini, a tough and unyielding Naval Academy instructor, with another officer who is more emotionally balanced. Santini never made it beyond the rank of colonel, while the other officer was promoted to general. The author describes the successful general as a man who has 'the quiet confidence to believe in himself and does not need any structure to reinforce that belief.'

This quote has been a guiding principle for me, especially during challenging moments. It taught me the importance of inner strength and emotional control. Whenever I face situations where my emotions want to take control, I remember this line. It has served me well both in the Navy and in my personal life, helping me maintain my composure and focus.

Other Influential Books and Movies

I am an avid reader, and several books have influenced my life, but none as profoundly as the Bible. Daily reading, praying, and striving to follow Christ's example have deepened my personal relationship with Him. I believe that finding a personal connection with someone like Jesus can bring immense hope, peace, and joy, even in the face of adversity.

In terms of movies, I once read the first book I ever read - The Pipeline Parable by Burke Hedges. This book had a lasting impact on me. As for movies, while there are many, there is no single one that stands out in my mind right now. However, I know that movies like Hachiko and The Great Santini hold a special place in my heart and have left an indelible mark on my life.

Books and movies can be powerful tools for personal growth and transformation. They can shape our beliefs, influence our actions, and even alter our personalities. It is essential to choose wisely and to recognize the impact that these media can have on our lives. I hope that through my reflection on how certain books and movies have impacted me, you can gain a deeper appreciation for the role that literature and cinema can play in our spiritual and emotional development.
