Has Steven Spielberg Lost His Touch in Directing Movies?
Directing a movie is about more than just writing a script; it’s about understanding every aspect of filmmaking, from shooting to editing. Spielberg has likely expanded his interests beyond just directing, perhaps even wanting to be involved in more aspects of the filmmaking process. To truly appreciate the technical and creative challenges, he might benefit from a year of hands-on experience, fetching coffee on set. Would Hitchcock or Hitch be there if this was needed?
I have stated this before, and I will say it again:
Steven Spielberg is, without a doubt, the most successful Hollywood popcorn movie director of all time. He has mastered all things cinema, and his track record of hits speaks volumes. However, as with all of us, he has aged and evolved within, particularly in his personal life. He no longer wants to embody the single boy with a house full of video games and hours to talk movies with his colleagues. He is aware that time is ticking, and he has earned the right to focus on whatever type of movie he desires before it’s too late. This is exactly what he is currently doing.
In the past 11 years, he has directed a series of films:
Lincoln Bridge of Spies The Post West Side Story The FabelmansSome may argue that he has ldquo;lost his touchrdquo; in his recent works, but I disagree. His output in the 2000s was solid, and his more recent films, like The Fabelmans and the upcoming remake of West Side Story, are showing a climb in quality from his earlier works.
Is it a fair question to ask if Spielberg has lost his touch? Not really. Spielberg is acutely aware that his career is nearing its peak, and he is making films for himself now. He knows he only has so many chances to make a film before retirement, so he is prioritizing smaller, more personal projects. Financial and critical success is certainly important, but it is not the primary driving force behind these recent productions. Spielberg has earned the right to choose what he wants to make, even if it is not as thrilling as his earlier blockbusters like Jaws or Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The upcoming release of a remake of West Side Story by Spielberg is a testament to his enduring talent and artistic evolution. There is no reason to doubt his abilities based on this project. With several critically acclaimed films to his name, the remaking of West Side Story is a significant and ambitious project that should excite audiences and critics alike.
Steven Spielberg is a visionary director who has not lost his touch. He is still evolving and pushing the boundaries of storytelling. Let him do what he wants, and let’s continue to support and appreciate his works.
