Gratitude and the Gifts of Thanksgiving in a Changing Life
Gratitude and the Gifts of Thanksgiving in a Changing Life
On this Thanksgiving day, I find myself reflecting on what I am most grateful for, both in the presents that have been given and the challenges that have arisen. Each of these experiences offers a unique insight into the deeper meaning of true gratitude.
The Importance of Gratitude in the Age of Change
At the root of my gratitude is the presence of my son, who is healthy, thriving, and happily serving in the United States Air Force. He misses the festive gatherings and the mountain of home-cooked meals we share. Yet, what I truly appreciate is knowing that he loves us for our warmth and the nourishing comfort of our cooking.
Family and Ancestry
My journey as a family man is a blend of enduring love and heartfelt thankfulness. I am married to my partner of 30 years, a love that has stood the test of time and trials. While it might seem superficial to celebrate the absence of difficult family dynamics, my gratitude extends to the fact that I no longer face the challenges of familial obligations during the holidays. This was a natural outcome as I was adopted from birth. However, the void of my adopted 'brother' and step-father deepens my understanding of the importance of close family ties and their role in personal well-being.
The Gift of Democracy
Amid a world where democracy seems fragile and the freedom of speech sometimes silenced, I am profoundly thankful for living in a democracy that upholds the basic human right of free speech. This freedom allows me to express my thoughts without fear of retribution or censorship. It is a powerful force that resonates deeply with platforms like Quora, Wattpad, Pinterest, and Discord, which have become virtual havens for creativity and expression. The ability to write, share, and connect with others around the world is a luxury I do not take for granted.
Unity in Diversity
One of the most profound expressions of gratitude I hold is the military. The soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who risk their lives to protect our freedoms are truly the modern equivalent of knights in shining armor. Serving a democracy means not just freedom to say what you want, but the very freedom to serve and protect what you believe in. Each time I think about the dedication of our military personnel, I am both thankful and humbled. This thankfulness isn't just lip service; it's the acknowledgment of the profound sacrifices made on our behalf.
Personal Growth and Reflection
My gratitude list could go on and on, as each day fills me with new sentiments to be thankful for. I am thankful for the close friendships I have, both online and in-person. I am thankful for the understanding and support they provide, especially during the busier times. Cole, for his unwavering help with math and all the other challenges life throws up. I am also thankful for living in a democracy, a system that allows me to participate in my society, say what I think, and challenge the status quo.
A Generous Thanksgiving Wish
To all reading this, I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy and Grateful Thanksgiving. May this day be a reminder of the blessings we take for granted and the people who make those blessings possible. Let's be grateful for the moments, the people, and the freedoms we have, and cherish them every day.
Happy Thanksgiving!
