How Many News Channels Do You Watch Daily?

During this current global pandemic, my routine has transformed. Gone are the days of watching multiple news channels every day. Instead, I have adopted a restaurant protocol, visiting numerous channels to ensure I am informed while selectively choosing the best for my needs. Every evening, from early to prime time, I watch MSNBC. On weekends, I add CNN to the mix.

My News Filtering Protocol

My primary goal in consuming news now is not to stay in the loop of endless updates but to gather information that will help me make better decisions and stay sane. Here's what I choose to consume and what I filter out:

What I Will Not Consume

Scorekeeping: News updates on the number of infected people in various countries. This information is neither actionable nor informative for me. Scorekeeping of Celebrities: It's simply unnecessary and does not provide useful information. Heartfelt Stories: Stories about individuals affected by the pandemic, while emotionally moving, do not change my ability to make informed decisions. Politicians: Their focus on their own agendas during a crisis is not beneficial. It's a time for unity, not division. Pundits: Their opinions are not based on concrete information, and I prefer data-driven insights.

What I Will Consume

Data Turned into Information: Resources that provide insights and trends, such as the Novel Coronavirus Infection Map from the University of Washington. This site provides detailed data and visualizations that help me understand the pandemic's progression globally. Epidemiologists: Their models and studies are invaluable. These experts offer a scientific approach to understanding the pandemic. Local Guidance and Restrictions: This information is crucial for my daily life. Knowing what I can and cannot do helps me plan and adapt to new circumstances.

The Clarity of Filtering

Since adopting my filtering protocol, I have found that the internet is a powerful tool for this process. By going to news sites, skimming headlines, and diving into consumable content, I can stay informed without the overwhelming flood of negative news. It's helped me stay prepared and sane.

A valuable suggestion from a trusted friend is to find a person you respect to help you filter the news. Ask them to inform you of any important information that can affect your life, good or bad. This way, you can stay on top of the news without succumbing to constant anxiety.

By being selective and informed, I am better equipped to navigate these unprecedented times.
