What Films Would Have Been a Sure Oscar/Academy Award Win if It Hadn’t

What Films Would Have Been a Sure Oscar/Academy Award Win if It Hadn’t Been Up Against Another Terrific Film the Same Year?

The journey of every film is a testament to the artistry and dedication of its creators. However, the outcome of the Oscars can sometimes be dictated by the strength of the competition. Here, we explore several films that, in the absence of their rivals, very well could have walked away with prestigious awards. These stories showcase the unpredictability of the Oscar ceremony and the impact that competition can have on the outcome.

Notable Examples of Missed Oscars

Throughout the history of the Academy Awards, some films have been unfairly overshadowed by their competitors:

Often regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, it lost to [Insert Film]. This groundbreaking film lost to [Insert Film]. Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece is often considered one of the best films ever made, yet it lost to [Insert Film]. Steven Spielberg’s war epic was a critical darling but lost to [Insert Film]. This film about the founding of Facebook was highly acclaimed but lost to [Insert Film]. This musical was a favorite and seemed on track for victory but lost to [Insert Film]. While it was praised for its technical achievements and immersive storytelling, it lost to [Insert Film].

These examples illustrate how the competition can sometimes overshadow deserving films, leading to outcomes that spark discussions and debates within the film community.

The 2018 Oscars: A Case Study

In 2018, The Shape of Water took home the Oscar for Best Picture. However, I believe that 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri should have won and likely would have if it hadn't faced the formidable competition from other films that year. The race was incredibly close, as the Academy voters struggled to choose between such fantastic films.

The Golden Age of 1982

One of the most memorable years for film in recent history was 1982. The winner that year was Gandhi, which I felt thoroughly deserved it. Other notable films in that year’s Oscar race include:

ET: The Extraterrestrial The Verdict Tootsie Missing

Of these, I believe the first three were equally deserving of the award. I would need to revisit Missing to make a more informed judgment. The year 1982 showcased a bouquet of exceptional works, with other noteworthy films such as My Favorite Year, Das Boot, Blade Runner, Poltergeist, Sophie’s Choice, Fanny and Alexander, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and The Year of Living Dangerously.

The Art of Competition in Motion Pictures

It is fascinating to reflect on why certain films, despite their excellence, miss out on recognition. Often, the quality of the competition is what determines the final outcome. This is not a flaw in the Oscar process but rather a natural outcome of the complicated ecosystem of film creation and appreciation.

By examining these “missed Oscars,” we not only appreciate the artistry of those films but also gain a deeper understanding of the film industry’s dynamic nature. It invites us to question the artistry and craftsmanship behind each nomination, as well as the tough choices that the Academy voters face every year.
