Essential Lessons for the 20s: Lessons Shared from Mid-40s

Introduction: As we navigate through the pivotal decade of our lives, the 20s, making the right decisions can set the foundation for a fulfilling future. Drawing from my experiences, I will share essential lessons that have guided me throughout my journey.

Focusing on Goals and Finding Meaning in Life

During your 20s, it's crucial to focus on your goals and understand the meaning of life. These years are a time for personal growth and learning. Embrace different kinds of knowledge and experiences that can enrich your life. Remember, actions speak louder than words. Don't just speak about your plans; take steps towards making them come true. Keep in mind, it's equally important to respect others and not envy their achievements.

Expanding Horizons and Embracing Life

While the 20s may feel like a whirlwind, it's important to go out and explore the world. This doesn't mean you should ignore your responsibilities but rather balance them with moments of adventure. For me, I used to dance and bowl once a week to socialize and have fun. Unfortunately, my actions led to misunderstandings with my children, who grew up believing I was doing something misrepresented. This experience taught me the importance of transparency and clear communication.

Don't allow others' opinions to define your worth. Instead, focus on building your own figure and identity. I remember moving across the country without a job in my early 20s, something that might seem daunting but turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I was confident, resourceful, and managed to find a great job without a college degree. This period was filled with joy and personal growth. Holding onto my early experiences has been invaluable in navigating life's challenges.

Not Getting Tied Down and Exploring the World

It's advisable not to get tied down too early in your 20s. Instead, spend more time exploring the world and life. In my mid-40s, I still prioritize exploring and learning about the world. I encourage young adults to embrace life fully, as life can be unpredictable. For instance, at 30, I got married and had twins, which brought a new level of responsibility and joy into my life. Just a few years later, at 35, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which brought a whole new set of challenges.

Despite the hardships, life continued, and I remained determined to live each moment to the fullest. I was fortunate to have had some savings when I moved, and my resourcefulness allowed me to find a good career. Even though it was tough, those experiences made me wiser and more resilient. I didn't always live in luxury, but I learned to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life.

I often tell my children that making mistakes is part of growing up. Without the chance to make mistakes, we might not truly experience life. If we aren't trying, we aren't living. Even though I didn't have everyone's approval, I tried to make the best choices I could, and that's what I advise others to do as well.

Conclusion: The 20s are a time full of opportunities and challenges. By focusing on your goals, exploring the world, and building your own identity, you can set a strong foundation for a fulfilling life. Remember, life is an ongoing journey, and the earlier you start, the better you will be positioned for success.
