Enhancing SWGOH: Thoughts on Adding Canon and Legends Characters
If you had the power to bring a new character to Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes (SWGOH), who would it be? For me, the choice hangs heavily on Grand Admiral Thrawn. This meticulously strategic military leader could add depth and new strategic options to the game. Let’s explore the reasons behind my selection and other characters that would enrich the game's roster.
Why Thrawn?
Strategic Depth: Thrawn is renowned for his ability to outthink opponents, manipulating turn order and leveraging his enemies' weaknesses. Introducing such mechanics would enhance the game by adding new layers of strategy.
Faction Synergy: As a Grand Admiral of the Empire, Thrawn could create interesting synergies with existing Imperial characters, enhancing their powers and introducing new team compositions. This could open up exciting new PvP and PvE strategies.
Lore and Popularity: Thrawn has a significant fan base, especially after his resurgence in the Star Wars Rebels series and the Thrawn novels by Timothy Zahn. His addition would appeal to both long-time fans and newer audiences, deepening the lore integration within SWGOH.
Unique Abilities: Thrawn’s background as an art appreciator could inspire abilities that provide bonuses based on enemy strengths and weaknesses, or even a mechanic that predicts enemy actions. These unique features would make him stand out and add depth to the game's mechanics.
Other Characters to Consider
Though Thrawn is my top pick, there are other fascinating characters from both canon and Legends worth considering. Here are a few more:
Canon Characters
Jedi Master Oppo Rancisis: Oppo Rancisis, a capable military commander and duelist, could be brought to SWGOH as a tank character. His buff/debuff abilities would speak to his tactical skills.
Quinlan Vos: Using Quinlan Vos as a support character would complement his typical undercover roles. An ability like Retrocognition, his ability to read inanimate objects and debuff opponents, would fit well. Additionally, introducing some synergy with his former Padawan Aayla Secura and later “partner” Barriss Offee would enhance his character.
Hondo Ohnaka: While Hondo’s character design in SWGOH remains an open question, he could be an interesting addition as an area attack character. An ability like “Speak softly and drive a big tank” could reflect his pirate abilities, and another, “As my sweet mother always said…” could provide various buffs and abilities.
Double Agent Kallus: Double Agent Kallus would gain different buffs based on the leader character. If a dark side leader, he’d become an attacker with boosts to attack and critical chance/damage. If a light side leader, he’d become a support character with higher protection and the taunt ability. This versatility could add significant strategic depth to his character.
Zuccus and 4-Lom: These Bounty Hunters from the Original Trilogy could complement the game’s roster. 4-Lom, with several targeting abilities, and Zuccus, with skills reflecting his Gand hunter tradition, could be introduced together with their ship, the Mist Hunter. The Mist Hunter could bring stealth capabilities and tractor beam debuffs to the game.
Lore and Popularity
Corran Horn: Corran Horn, a former member of Rogue Squadron and Jedi Knight, could excel with abilities that absorb energy, increasing the power of his force abilities or reducing cooldowns. His unique powers of illusion could be a valuable asset.
Winter: Winter, a Rebel operative with minimal attacking abilities but strong buff/debuff skills, would be perfect as a support character. Her stealth abilities and the ability to call all Rebel/New Republic allies to attack a single target would be powerful.
Mara Jade: Just like Double Agent Kallus, Mara Jade would adapt to the leader character in the game. If a dark side leader, she’d be a powerful attacker with stealth abilities. If a light side leader, she’d have buff abilities and still be a powerful attacker. Her ship, the Jade's Fire, could also be added to the game.
Soontir Fel: Soontir Fel, one of the deadliest Imperial Pilots, would bring strong attack abilities to the game. His Tie Interceptor with the red blood stripes could also be introduced as a unique ship in SWGOH.
Conclusion
The addition of these characters would not only enrich the game's roster but also provide players with new strategic options. Whether it's Thrawn's unparalleled strategic depth, Oppo Rancisis's tactical prowess, or Mara Jade’s adaptability, these characters would add valuable depth and excitement to SWGOH.
