Empowering Women: Beyond Equal Rights and Towards Independence

From the moment I became aware of the gender inequality that has persisted through the decades, it has been a battle for me. Back in 1972 when the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was signed, the journey toward equality seemed daunting. Prior to the ERA, women faced significant limitations, including being denied the right to have their own credit cards. While a lot of progress has been made, it often feels like we are moving at a glacial pace. Why is it taking so long?

Women's empowerment is a vital concept, but it must be grounded in equality. As a life coach, I firmly believe in the equality of all genders and people, regardless of their background. Providing women with special privileges under the guise of empowerment is not true empowerment; it should only be granted where absolutely necessary. Just like teaching someone how to fish is far more beneficial than simply giving them a fish, we should focus on educating women and providing them with the resources and opportunities to achieve their full potential.

Education, equal job opportunities, and encouraging women to contribute to society are fundamental to true empowerment. We want to empower independent women who can make informed decisions and be active contributors to their communities. Programs like the Women Inspiring Network, which support women in fashion, business, and leadership, are essential in fostering self-expression and growth. Instead of creating a dependent population, we aim to uplift women who already possess the strength and drive to achieve their goals.

The fight for women's empowerment extends to the workplace, where equality goes beyond equal pay. It involves creating a supportive work environment that recognizes and accommodates the different needs of employees. This includes providing leaves for difficult periods, allowing flexible working arrangements, and encouraging maternity and paternity leaves. Men should be encouraged to participate in parenting and household responsibilities, challenging traditional gender stereotypes that can lead to imbalanced and harmful dynamics in both workplaces and homes.

Empowerment means giving women the freedom, opportunities, and resources to make decisions for themselves, contribute to society, and achieve their full potential. It encompasses equal access to education, career growth, financial independence, and leadership roles. It is about fostering independence, confidence, and equality in all aspects of life. By focusing on these areas, we can truly empower women and create a more just and equitable society.
