Embracing the Future: Lessons from 15 to 24

As a 15-year-old, it can be easy to feel uncertain about the future. Will you find your place in the world, or will life always feel like an obstacle course? While it's true that many career paths and personal goals won't be clear until later, there are steps you can take now to make the most of your teenage years and set yourself up for success. Here are some insights and tips to help guide you through this exciting time.

Join in the Fun: Extracurricular Activities

At your age, it's important to explore a variety of extracurricular activities. Join the band or choir, play sports, or participate in a speech club. These activities not only provide enjoyment but also help you develop essential social skills, a sense of teamwork, and the ability to compete both with others and against yourself. By engaging in these various activities, you'll discover new potentials within yourself and potentially make lifelong friends along the way.

Read, Read, Read

One of the most important things you can do is to read. There is an overwhelming amount of beautiful literature out there, and by carrying a book with you always, you'll expand your mind and deepen your understanding of the world. Reading doesn't have to be limited to fiction. Non-fiction books, especially those that explore subjects within your interests, can provide valuable insights and knowledge that will be with you for life.

Dare to Try New Things

Most importantly, dare to try new things. This doesn't mean engaging in dangerous activities, but it does mean stepping outside your comfort zone and taking risks. During your high school and college years, there were likely times when you felt confined and wished you had more fun. Now is the time to go out there and make the most of your youth. Apply for jobs, take free workshops, and apply for interesting internships. By doing so, you'll gain valuable life experiences that you can treasure for a lifetime.

Listening to Your Inner Voice

Personal growth and clarity often come from within. It's important to listen carefully to yourself and act courageously on what you hear. Here are three key events that helped me gain perspective and get back on track:

The Voice in the Lab: In 1978, as I was studying to become a doctor, a voice in the lab reminded me, 'If you're not careful, you could spend the rest of your life in here and not out there.' This was a powerful moment that made me consider the bigger picture. Following Your Bliss: At that time, philosopher Joseph Campbell was discussing the concept of 'following your bliss.' Remembering a time when I was deliriously happy, like when me and my brother sold hats to visitors at Graceland, helped me realize the importance of finding joy in my work and personal life. The Job Opportunity: During my graduate school classes, a Senior VP for Finance and Operations approached me with a job offer at Schering-Plough. While it took me some time to understand what a Brand Manager was, this encounter was a turning point that led me to a fulfilling career path.

These experiences taught me the importance of listening to my inner voice and acting on it. If you're unsure about your future, take a moment to reflect on what makes you happy and excited. Then, take a step towards making that a reality. Remember, every decision you make is a step towards the future you want to create.

Conclusion

As you navigate your teenage years, embrace the opportunities to grow and learn. Join in the fun of extracurricular activities, dive into reading, and dare to try new things. Most importantly, listen to your inner voice and act on it. By doing so, you'll set yourself up for a successful and fulfilling future. Good luck on your journey!
