Eerie and Unnerving: The Scariest Songs of All Time
Music has the uncanny ability to evoke emotions, and certain songs strike a chord of fear like no other. From the vicious lyrics of a mercenary's anthem to the haunting tones of classic rock, there are tunes that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Let’s dive into some of the scariest songs ever created.
The Eliminator by Agnostic Front
Opening with the chilling line “Killing’s my business and business is fine,” The Eliminator by Agnostic Front stands as one of the scariest songs out there. This piece, sung from the perspective of a cold-blooded mercenary, manages to be scary just by its lyrical content. But the fear reaches new heights when you consider what this song inspired.
Former Navy SEAL Jock Willink and I have a few things in common: a love for Agnostic Front and a history of combat against ISIS/Al Qaeda in Iraq. During Willink’s time commanding Task Force Bruiser in Ramadi, it’s no stretch to imagine that The Eliminator was played around the team house. On my end, from 2015 to 2017 when I was working with the Russian armed forces to thwart terrorists in Syria, the song was on heavy rotation.
Black Sabbath (Live Version)
One eerily unsettling song that stands out is Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album. While the original version is already a haunting one, there's a version found in live recordings that truly takes the cake. This version, which wasn't officially released, features the perfect vocalist to make the song even scarier.
The original version from the album shares its name with the band and is indeed a sinister-sounding song. The live version, however, is better. The band discovered the perfect voice to bring this dark song to life. I firmly believe that Ian Gillan, well-known for his work with Deep Purple, was the singer who truly elevated the song.
Gillan’s version includes a chilling laugh that gradually transforms into maniacal shrieks. Hearing him laugh and shriek in a way that sounds as though he is possessed creates a unique and terrifying experience. While many other heavy metal songs are dark and sinister, this track ventures into new territory.
Vocalist Ian Gillan's Performance
One of Ian Gillan's most memorable performances with Black Sabbath was on the album Born Again, released in August 1983. Gillan's version of Black Sabbath not only surpasses what Ozzy Osbourne could have done but also transcends the original.
Gillan's performance is a stunning and sinister take on the classic song. The continued laughter and shrieks he evokes create a genuine sense of fear and unease. To truly appreciate the magic of this performance, you must listen to the live version:
