Could We See More Multi-Doctor Episodes of Doctor Who in Series Eleven?

Technically, we've just had one in series 12, but the question remains: will we see more multi-doctor episodes in series 11?

Recent Crossovers and the Future

We will probably get another multi-doctor episode at the 60th anniversary, but there are other scenarios that could occur. For instance, 'Twice Upon a Time' was a crossover episode that featured multiple actors portraying the Doctor. Another scenario could be a Five-Doctors episode, possibly even with the reboot Doctors. However, there may be challenges when it comes to the Classic Doctors due to their age and health conditions. An interesting workaround could be for them to play another character, like Tom Baker as The Curator, or write around their ages, such as Peter Davison in 'Time Crash'.

There's also the possibility of having another actor take over for a deceased Doctor, similar to David Bradley in 'The Curator'. However, the current actors seem to be quite busy, making appearances and taking on various projects. Matt Smith and David Tennant, in particular, already have a full schedule, including theater, television, and movie projects.

Historical Context and Current Trends

When Steven Moffat was showrunner, multi-doctor episodes were common, largely due to the 50th-anniversary events. With the 50th anniversary, multiple Doctors were needed, including a new one, an old one (John Hurt), and a special episode for the 8th Doctor to bridge the classic and revival series. Although Peter Capaldi's tenure brought a new dynamic with his portrayal of an old, geeky Doctor, it's unlikely that we'll see as many multi-doctor episodes under Chris Chibnall's showrunnership.

Chris Chibnall certainly doesn't have the same timing and luxuries as Steven Moffat did. The BBC is likely to return to the dashing young Doctor archetype, and there's no nice anniversary timing unless Chibnall remains as showrunner for the 15th anniversary of the revival.

Conclusion

While multi-doctor episodes would be delightful, the current circumstances make it seem unlikely. However, everything is possible in the ever-evolving world of Doctor Who. The show continues to surprise us, but with a fresh cast and crew, it may be a few seasons before we see another significant multi-doctor episode.

Even as we look forward to series 11, Whovians can only hope that Matt Smith and David Tennant will continue to make appearances, as their involvement brings a depth and nostalgia to the series that cannot be replicated.
