Do You Relate to Anakin Skywalker - A Star Wars Fan’s Perspective

Calling all Star Wars fans here. This is a question I want an honest response to: Do you personally feel like you can in any way relate to Anakin Skywalker? Can it be the movie Anakin or the Clone Wars Anakin? I relate slightly more to the movie one, but that's a subjective matter.

Despite my repeated criticisms of Lucas and the Saga he created, I am still a huge fan though more of what it could have been than of how it turned out. Anyway, I don’t relate to the Anakin we saw on the screen much. Lucas made him childish and petulant, not intensely idealistic as I think he should have been.

I wanted the story arc of Anakin to be that he started as a slave child and worked to become a powerful Jedi in hopes of leading the Order on a campaign to end slavery in the Republic among other ills. And as has happened to idealists before him, he tried to take a shortcut to saving the universe by adding Dark Side elements to his 'toolkit' not because he was a whiny brat as Lucas did with him. In another way of saying it, I wanted Anakin to go bad as a part of his extreme dedication to being a force for endless good.

Let me share my experience and thoughts with you. I could relate to that version of Anakin. But not what we got.

My Passion for Technology and Creativity

Yes. I love to tinker. I'm into technology and love creativity. These attributes have helped me relate to Anakin's journey, despite the missteps. My passion for technology resonates with his growing curiosity about the Force and its potential uses. Creativity is akin to his imaginative approach to solving problems, much like when he deals with his fellow Jedi or battling Separatists.

A Doomed Love for Natalie Portman

Oh, certainly. I also had a doomed love for Natalie Portman, the actress who portrayed Padmé Amidala and later, QueenAtroa. Our relationship was complex and ultimately ended in disappointment, much like Anakin's idealistic hopes for personal happiness and idealism. This journey of heartbreak and frustration partially mirrored his own path.

A Connection to ROTS Anakin

For a short time, I related to ROTS Anakin. After leaving a toxic relationship and starting a new job, I felt angry and detached, just like Anakin/Vader did on Mustafar. I was fine with my coworkers and customers, but I would sit by myself in the break room, reading and not talking to anyone unless they spoke to me first. It took me a few months to come out of my shell. The isolation and anger mirrored Anakin's hardships and ambitions.

My Final Thoughts on Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker was a whiny—and eventually homicidal—brat. I cannot relate to him in the slightest. While I understand his plot-to-end slavery ambitions and his drive, I fundamentally disapprove of the dark path he chose. His methods were misguided and ultimately destructive not just to himself but to the galaxy.
