In most states, deputy sheriffs and city police officers share the same police powers. They are both capable of enforcing laws across the entire state, but this is generally discouraged outside their employing agency's jurisdiction. However, the extent of overlap depends largely on state laws and specific county structures.

County-Level Law Enforcement

The sheriff's office typically provides law enforcement services to the entire county, excluding certain municipalities that do not contract for service. In some counties, the sheriff has the option to establish a county police department, such as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department or the Prince William County Police Department. However, in counties like San Francisco, CA, and Cook County, IL, the sheriff's office focuses primarily on maintaining the jail and civil process, with deputy sheriffs remaining law enforcement officers.

Diverse Jurisdictions

A deputy sheriff's jurisdiction is typically confined to the county in which they serve. This means they can patrol and enforce laws in all areas of the county, including unincorporated areas, as well as cities that have contracted for sheriff's services.
