Diversity in TV News Presenting: Challenges and Opportunities for People of Color

Observations of the U.S. broadcast networks during major events, such as the U.S. elections, have highlighted a significant disparity in the representation of people of color (POCs) as news presenters. Networks like ABC, CBS, and NBC, which have major nightly newscasts, predominantly feature white presenters. The figures from these networks, such as Lester Holt at NBC and Norah O’Donnell at CBS, represent only a few exceptions. In contrast, another major network, Fox Broadcasting, tends to rely on their sister cable channel, Fox News, for breaking news and major events.

Despite the limited representation, the challenges facing POCs in breaking into the field of news presenting extend beyond simply being a person of color. As some experts suggest, it encompasses factors such as presentation skills and experience in smaller markets before moving to larger ones. According to industry insiders, to "make it big", one needs to start as a field reporter in smaller markets, then gradually work their way up to larger markets where they can gain more exposure. The more exposure a journalist gains, the higher the chances of being noticed by major networks.

Observing the current representation of POCs in both TV news and other media platforms, it’s essential to acknowledge the strides being made while also recognizing the ongoing challenges. The news industry has indeed seen an increase in representation, with some notable examples like Gail King, an anchor on a national morning news show on CBS. However, this positive trend is not uniform across all regions and networks. In some areas and among specific networks, the representation of POCs is significantly higher.

One of the factors underpinning the challenges faced by POCs in news presenting is the identity politics. POCs are increasingly breakingboxes by securing positions, but this progress can sometimes be undermined by societal pressures and stereotypes. For instance, the concept of “acting white” exists within some black communities, where speaking proper English or pursuing higher education is seen as negatively aligned with the community's perceived values. This mentality not only hinders individual success but also can be detrimental to the advancement of POCs in the industry.

On the other hand, the sports field appears less affected by these social dynamics. Figures like Don Lemon, who serves as a sideline reporter for CNN, and several other POCs have made significant impacts in sports broadcasting, showcasing that the sports industry may offer a more welcoming environment for POCs to leverage their talents.

It's important to recognize and support efforts to promote diversity in news presenting. This involves not only increasing numbers but also improving the quality and authenticity of representation. Media organizations should strive to provide equal opportunities for POCs to develop their skills and bring a variety of perspectives to the forefront. Additionally, the public can also play a role by supporting and recognizing POCs in these roles, further highlighting the importance of diversity in news media.

As the industry continues to evolve, the landscape of news presenting will undoubtedly face new challenges and opportunities. We must keep these debates open and constructive to break down barriers and foster a more inclusive environment in the news industry.
