The Dwarves, coveting the Silmaril, attempted to take it from Thingol, leading to Thingol's death. This event caused Melian to depart Doriath, leaving behind the protective magic that had kept the realm safe from Morgoth.

Fe?nor's sons, vengeful and seeking the Silmaril, attacked Doriath, killing many Teleri elves. Galadriel and Celeborn, along with a few Teleri, managed to survive. The deep-seated hatred between the Teleri and the Dwarves began, setting the stage for the deep-seated animosity between Gimli and Legolas.
