Critique of the Oprah Interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
Critique of the Oprah Interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
As an American, my initial feelings towards the Royal Family were colored by their treatment of Princess Diana. However, I have since admitted that their efforts to support the sons of Diana and Prince Harry have been commendable. Nonetheless, the recent Oprah interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry raised several concerns that warrant discussion.
The Petty Tone of the Interview
The entire tone of the interview struck me as petty. It is particularly disappointing given the sensitive circumstances of the husband of Harry’s ‘beloved’ grandmother's hospitalization. While I understand that TV schedules are rigidly set, it would have been more considerate to address these concerns with more sensitivity and thoughtfulness. Harry’s intention during the interview was to voice some of the pain he experienced due to his family's actions during his life. However, Meghan had to make the situation even worse by introducing even more scandalous claims.
Another element that discomforted me was when the interviewers did not feel they were receiving sufficient emotional support, they brought up race. While there is no denying that media coverage of the royal family has at times been problematic, it is unfair to expect the Royal Family to control what the media writes. Freedom of speech, just like in many other countries, is a fundamental right that should be respected.
Comparison with Media and Public Perception
Regarding the media, it is important to note that the paparazzi have dealt more kindly with Meghan than with Princess Diana or Princess Catherine. Diana and Catherine had to endure constant harassment for years, while Meghan did not. As a white person, I must admit that when Meghan mentioned someone expressing interest in Archie's skin color, it did not come as a surprise. Many white individuals, including my mother, have had similar experiences with newborns of other races, often finding it difficult to predict their appearance.
However, Meghan could have handled the situation more gracefully. She could have simply explained that most children’s skin color is not easily predictable. While it is tiring to explain such nuanced topics, she should remember that her racial identity is as much a part of her as her name is to me. It is only when people persistently mispronounce her name that she should become annoyed.
The Media’s Double Standards
The media often sets a double standard when it comes to the Royal Family and the public. While the public has the right to feel curious, the media has a responsibility to report on these matters in a more balanced and fair manner. Meghan Markle’s treatment by the media has highlighted the need for a more empathetic and respectful approach to these sensitive topics.
Conclusion
The Oprah interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry brought to light several issues and double standards within the media and the Royal Family. While there are valid points to be made about the media’s role and the Royal Family’s responsibility, the interview itself seemed to lack the necessary sensitivity and empathy. As a society, we must strive to understand and support each other more effectively, especially in times of adversity.
