Couples' Retreats: Frequency and Benefits

The frequency of couples taking trips together can vary widely based on factors such as individual preferences, financial situation, work commitments, and family responsibilities. However, studies and surveys suggest that many married couples prioritize spending quality time together away from their daily routines.

On average, many couples aim to take at least one or two trips a year just for the two of them. Some might take shorter weekend getaways more frequently, while others may opt for longer vacations less often. The key is that couples often find these trips beneficial for strengthening their relationship and creating shared memories.

Personal Experiences and Insights

Driving for Lunch

As a fun anecdote, I once drove over four hours just to have lunch at a restaurant that was over 175 miles away. Spending time away from our usual routine was indeed a precious moment. We get away when we can, and it's very pleasing to be with my wife.

Annual Vacations

My husband and I have no children and often go out of town, even for 2–3 nights, about twice a year. We also have a bigger vacation for about two weeks. The frequency depends on our finances and circumstances. It's important to balance work, bills, and family responsibilities to ensure we have time to reconnect as a couple.

Farm Renovation

Let me share a more seasoned experience. Before purchasing our farm in Zionsville, Pa., my wife and I spent nearly every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day at a family-owned beachfront property in Brigantine, New Jersey. The tourists were gone, and the mornings were peaceful. We would wake up early, put on our swimsuits, and head to the deck for coffee. As the sun rose over the horizon, we would walk to the beach and enjoy a quiet swim before a relaxing walk along the shore.

That year, we decided to buy a piece of land and turn it into a beautiful home. It was an extensive renovation that included restoring a 55,000-gallon in-ground pool, painting a 64” by 42’ porch, gutting the kitchen and installing new appliances, and re-staining hardwood floors. Every room needed repainting, and the upstairs claw-foot bathtub needed to be reglazed. My wife loved that tub. We also had to power-wash the fieldstone walls of the farmhouse. It was a journey of almost a year and a half before we transformed it into a lovely home.

In 1995, the renovation was completed, and we continued to live our lives, enjoying the weekends and our vacations. The beachfront property was a special place where we built many memories before the farm became our sanctuary.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the frequency of couples' trips can differ significantly from one couple to another. It's best to consider personal circumstances and preferences. Whether it's a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, making time for each other can have a positive impact on a relationship. Sharing experiences and creating memories together can be incredibly rewarding.
