The Dilemma of Season 5

The beloved sitcom Community has been a hit for years, but now the question on many fans' minds is whether or not to bring the series back for a fifth season. As a long-term fan of the show, I initially held out hope for a continuation, but recent changes in management have dampened that optimism.

Shaky Fates and Fan Sentiment

Judging by the departure of Dan Harmon, the creator who was behind the sharp, impactful writing that defined the show, and a few other talented writers, it's not hard to be skeptical about the series' future. The introduction of new writers has added an extra layer of uncertainty. The fourth season premiere was odd, to say the least, and that's not a promising start for a lineup that relies on its tight writing and character dynamics.

There's a pervasive sentiment among fans that it's time to close the book on the series. While I'm still as captivated by Jeff Winger's stewardship of Pierce Community College, the latest episodes showcase a show that feels both dated and disconnected from the magic that made Community beloved. It's a tough pill to swallow, considering how much I admire Dan Harmon's genius, but the show's potential new direction leaves a lot to be desired.

The Academic Journey - A Lengthy Adventure

A community college experience is known for being a winding, unfinished educational odyssey. For many students, the journey can span more than four years. Pierce, one of the characters, even started attending over a decade ago, while Jeff Winger himself, the show's star, spent six years there. This extended tenure often feels like a series of interludes between obligations, with academic achievements and personal growth being more episodic than linear.

From my own perspective, participating in the community college experience was similar. I changed my major several times, finding myself in a state of perpetual flux. This pattern of frequent redirection made community college less about achieving a degree and more about exploring different interests and paths in life. The lengthy duration seems almost designed to foster a free-flowing, discovery-driven approach to education, rather than the more structured four-year university.

Character Dynamics and a Logical Arc

The characters in Community, especially Jeff Winger, are characterstic of a group facing a new challenge. With the season 4 premiere, Jeff seems more intent than ever on finally graduating, which sets up a logical arc for the characters. A compelling idea could be to introduce a situation where Jeff completes his degree and then returns to the college to take over as Dean, driven by a sense of responsibility for the school he'd spent so many years coaxing through its programs. Such a storyline would offer a new dynamic for Jeff, who is perpetually seeking novelty and variety.

However, this arc might also require the series to address the rising responsibilities of the characters. We're already seeing examples with Shirley's sandwich shop and Abed's TV commercials, where the characters are increasingly invested in the community college's future. The students like Troy, Britta, and Pierce, while still valuable to the story, are often essential as background vessels for these developments, carrying out tasks without much personal growth of their own.

Conclusively, while fans might hold on to the hope for a fifth season, the questions of character arcs, the show's direction, and the value of extending the story are paramount. As much as we might want to see the show thrive, it's essential to consider the overall experience and to respect the essence of what made Community so special.
