Planning an outdoor wedding can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it also comes with its challenges. One of the most critical decisions is selecting the right date. Here are some expert tips to help you pick the best time for your special day.

Consult a Meteorologist for the Optimal Date

Even in the warmer seasons, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate. To ensure you have the best chance of a beautiful day, it's wise to consult a meteorologist familiar with your particular area. They can provide you with the most accurate dates for the time period you have in mind.

In addition to consulting a meteorologist, having a backup plan is crucial. Always have a tent or an indoor facility available as a contingency in case rain, fog, extreme heat, snowstorms, or any other unexpected weather decides to crash your event.

Selecting the Perfect Month

Traditionally, the high season for outdoor weddings is from June to August. During this time, most people are on vacation, and the weather is typically good, making it easier for your guests to attend. However, it's important to note that weather is becoming less predictable, even in traditionally reliable regions.

Based on my observations, for couples I have photographed, the most ideal time to get married in recent years has been late spring and early autumn. The warmth of the season is just right for outdoor ceremonies, the sun isn't as strong, and the light looks more romantic and softer in photographs. Additionally, this time of year has a milder climate, which is better for your guests and provides a more comfortable experience.

Consider the Costs and Crowds

Renting a venue, hiring photographers, and videographers can be more expensive during the high season, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. This is due to the increased demand. You may find more favorable deals if you choose a date outside of the peak season.

Another factor to consider is the day of the week. Fridays and Saturdays are usually the busiest for event spaces, while weekdays typically offer more flexibility. Picking the right date can also help you secure the venue and other vendors at a better rate.

Striking the Balance Between Heat and Comfort

As a resident of the Pacific Northwest (PNW), I understand the unpredictable nature of the weather here. Oregon, in particular, is known for its hot months, but by the end of August, the plants in a green grass field can start looking dead or near death.

After careful consideration, we ultimately decided to move our wedding date a month to the earlier part of the hot season. By doing so, we ensured that the backdrop for our ceremony would be lush and green. Our ceremony would likely take place around 95°F, but by starting at 7-8 PM, we would avoid the peak heat, and the light would be better for photographs.

Even with the cooler temperatures at night, the Pacific Northwest's weather can change drastically. For example, while it might be 95°F during the day, it can drop to 70°F or lower at night. This underscored the importance of selecting a date that balances the warmth of the day with the cooler evening temperatures for a more comfortable experience for all guests.
