Childhood Adventures: Fun and Funny Stories from My Past
Childhood is a time full of innocence and mischief. Here are a couple of funny and delightful stories from my own childhood that still bring a smile to my face.
Ah, Guava and a Watchman’s Dilemma!
Things were a bit hectic when I was in the fourth grade. During one interval break, I found myself in a guava garden next to my school. With no garden watchman around, I had no trouble climbing the tree to pick some guavas. It wasn't long before I had a good number of guavas in my hand. Just as I tried to take a bite, the tree was a bit too wobbly and the guava fell right into the watchman’s feet.
Fast forward, the watchman had arrived and he was no happy camper. He was calling for me to come down, but I didn't move a muscle. His anger was palpable, but he decided to wait it out on the ground with a stick, ready to have his ‘bracelet’ taken off! When the interval bell rang, I was still perched on the tree. When I couldn't come down, I took a mischievous route. I climbed to a nearby house and jumped onto its roof, then slid down to the road. Timing the perfect moment, I arrived at school just as the bell rang.
Thankfully, the watchman didn't recognize me. He was busy sharing a story with his colleagues about what he thought happened two or three days ago. Spying on him, I couldn't stop laughing. When he finally noticed me, he inquired what was so amusing. I admitted that I had been the one who climbed the tree, and then made a quick exit!
Morning Jog and an Unexpected Escape Plan!
When I was just around 12 years of age, my friends and I thought it would be a cool idea to jog in the early morning. In our neighborhood, there were about 10 to 12 kids of our age. We all decided that we would meet at 5:00 AM outside the Neem Tree, which was our designated meeting point.
My parents were quite independent and got to know about our plans early. To their amusement, my siblings and I shared our plans with them, eliciting a funny response. My parents laughed and thought we were too young to jog. Unfortunately, I was too excited to sleep that night and got up around 4:30 AM. I woke my brother, who was sound asleep, and then rushed to the meeting point. While I was there, only two of my friends showed up, so we visited each others' homes, and everyone finally gathered by 5:20 AM. We set off.
We jogged for about 10 to 15 minutes. Exasperated from the hard exercise, I started sliding down a hill from plastic bottles. I got scratched quite badly but didn't stop for fear of worry. Sitting on the ground in pain, I noticed one of my friends, Akash, was also sitting quietly. I asked him if everything was okay, and he confessed, "I can’t bear anymore, I want to go home. It is just that I need to use the restroom."
Quickly, I called out to the others, and led us on our way back home. For some reason, this time Akash was quicker again, racing ahead to his home before we could reach properly!
These experiences, among many others, made my childhood both fun and memorable. Even today, they bring a smile to my face and remind me of the joy of a carefree youth.
