My Lifelong Love Affair with Cinema

As an avid movie enthusiast, I have repeatedly returned to certain films that have captured my imagination and provided endless enjoyment. This article explores the power of cinematic storytelling through a personal journey of repeatedly watching the same movies over and over again.

Classics and Analysis: The Art of Filmmaking

When I taught an introductory course on screenwriting, a highlight of the year was dedicating an extra session to delve into Federico Fellini's masterwork, Fellini's 8?. Breaking down this film not only enhanced my students' understanding of storytelling, but also brought immense pleasure to my teaching. Several scenes from this film have been reimagined in other movies, such as Big Fish and Short Bus. The experience of analyzing and comparing films like Sleepless in Seattle, The Sixth Sense, and Stir of Echoes provided invaluable insights into the craft of filmmaking.

Television Regulars: Movies by the Chunk

My love for certain films extends far beyond the cinema. Many movies have become fixtures on TV through regular broadcasts, which I often catch on my designated movie marathon days. Some of these favorites include:

Avengers Hellboy Ironman High School Musical Despicable Me Monsters Inc. Terminator Up

These films, along with many more international blockbusters, have become a regular part of my movie schedule. From the United States to India, from the classic Don No. 1 and Robot to My Name is Khan and Ghajini, these films have amassed significant viewership and have left a lasting impact on my movie-watching habits.

Personal Favorites: Jaws and Star Wars

Beyond the regular listings, there are some movies that hold a special place in my heart due to their impact and emotional resonance. For example, Jaws was a monumental experience when I watched it for the first time at 11 years old. The film left an indelible mark on my young mind and has been rewatched multiple times over the years. Similarly, Star Wars premiered when the film was fresh, and I have seen it numerous times during its initial run, each viewing strengthening my devotion to the series.

Comfort Films: A Pandora's Box of Emotions

There are certain films that have become my go-to comfort movies. Smokey and the Bandit, for instance, is a film that, even after numerous viewings, manages to uplift my spirits and provide a much-needed respite from life's challenges. Other films like Dawn of the Dead, which was unlike anything I had seen in theaters, have had a profound emotional impact. I have seen this film in multiple formats, from 16 mm film borrowed from the library to both VHS and DVD.

My Versatile Movie Bank: From Classics to Mindless Entertainment

Of all the films that I have repeatedly watched, the ones that stand out as my all-time favorites are a toss-up between Princess Bride, Galaxy Quest, and the highly acclaimed Serenity. I am also a big fan of Night of the Twisters, a 1996 film that I found compelling and family-friendly.

The majority of the movies I frequently return to, however, are more mindless fare. Films like Major League, Animal House, and The Fistful of Dollars are perfect for tuning out for an hour and half. Whether I want to indulge in the popcorn-fueled excitement of a sports movie or the unmitigated joy of a quirky comedy, these films are always ready to provide a distraction.
