Overcoming Bias in Eye Color: Green Eyes in an Age of Blue

I have green eyes, and I couldn’t be happier with them. Personally, I don’t find the proliferation of songs celebrating blue eyes to be troublesome. What others like has no bearing on my preferences, and I simply don’t let external opinions sway my feelings about anything, including my eye color.

The Impact of Eye Songs

I’m aware that many songs celebrate blue eyes, yet this doesn’t diminish my appreciation for my own green eyes. In fact, despite the abundance of blue-eyed praises, I have noticed a significant number of songs that specifically mention green eyes. These include hits by artists such as Coldplay, Dolly Parton, Erykah Badu, Alan Jackson, and Tommy Dorsey.

Often, eye songs are neither an endorsement nor a personal attack. They simply reflect the artist's individual tastes and do not represent a universal standard of beauty. Personally, I don’t take it amiss when others celebrate eye colors I don’t possess. Take “Green Eyes” by Coldplay, for instance—what faux pas did I commit to warrant being compared to chopped liver?

People gravitate toward different eye colors for a myriad of reasons. Some adore green, some prefer hazel, and others revel in the rarer grey or brown. What’s essential is recognizing that these preferences don’t diminish the beauty of any eye color. I, for one, adore blue eyes, but I can’t help but admire the uniqueness of other eye colors too.

The Rarity and Beauty of Green Eyes

Songs, by their very nature, don’t exist in reality; they are artistic expressions that reflect human sentiment and aesthetics. It’s important not to take these expressions too literally. The fact that many songs celebrate blue eyes doesn’t mean everyone desires them or feels the same way.

Green eyes are indeed rare, appearing in less than 2% of the global population. This rarity gives green eyes a distinct charm. There are songs dedicated to green eyes, such as “Green Eyes” by Coldplay, which likely wouldn’t have gained popularity if green eyes were common. Songs like “Pretty Green Eyes” by Ultra Beat highlight the uniqueness and beauty of green eyes, making them all the more cherished.

For those with green eyes, it’s essential to embrace this special color and take pride in their uniqueness. Brown, blue, grey, hazel, and green eyes—each has its own distinct allure. By celebrating all eye colors, we enrich our understanding of diversity and add depth to our appreciation of human beauty.
