Battling New Age Beliefs: My Struggle with the Law of Attraction and Antivaxx Movement
The New Age movement encompasses a diverse range of beliefs, practices, and theories. While many of these are intriguing, some cross the line into destructiveness. The Law of Attraction and the Antivaxx Movement are two such areas that irk me deeply. In this article, I'll outline why these beliefs are not only misguided but also harmful.
The Law of Attraction: Wishful Thinking at its Worst
The Law of Attraction is a core tenant in many New Age teachings, stating that everything in life is a manifestation of one's thoughts and energy. The phrase "if you want it, it will happen" has become a mantra for many adherents, transforming wishful thinking into a pseudo-scientific belief system. However, this concept is not exclusive to New Age practices. It has been adopted by various other ideologies, including modern American conservative movements.
In essence, the Law of Attraction is a form of wishful thinking, and like wishful thinking, it is destructive. It is particularly problematic in the context of vaccination. Many refuse the COVID vaccine, trusting instead in the Law of Attraction to protect them, despite scientific evidence and expert recommendations. This can be traced back to the belief that wellness should be achieved through positive thinking rather than practical, evidence-based measures.
The Antivaxx Movement: Fear and Ignorance Driving Dangerous Decisions
Among the most rage-inducing New Age beliefs is the Antivaxx Movement. This movement is a group of individuals paralyzed by fear and willful ignorance, leading them to reject Western medicine and natural alternatives. Their choices, based on unfounded beliefs, can have severe consequences, particularly for younger individuals who are vulnerable and cannot independently make these decisions.
The antivaxx movement led to many instances where children and young adults were exposed to preventable diseases such as the Swine Flu, Meningitis, and typical winter flu. Vaccines are marvels of modern medicine, and the refusal of these individuals to vaccinate their children has resulted in the unnecessary spread of diseases and potentially tragic outcomes. My own history with vaccines exemplifies the dangers of such beliefs: my parents delayed my vaccinations until I was a legal adult, and I count myself fortunate to have not been exposed to these diseases earlier in life.
Subtle Influences and the Mind as a Builder
While many New Age practices may have subtle influences on individuals, their impact is usually minimal unless one invests substantial faith in them. The mind is indeed a powerful builder, and our beliefs can shape our reality to some extent. However, this does not mean that all New Age practices are harmful; some may offer comfort or even practical benefits.
It is essential to recognize that the mind can be the builder, but it can also be the destroyer. The belief that sheltering young people from criticism and anger under the guise of "snowflake culture" is a damaging, and I argue, a form of self-censorship. It goes against the principles of free speech and individual responsibility. The idea that every adult should live in a safe, pain-free environment where no one is allowed to upset them is not only unrealistic but also harmful. It undermines personal growth and resilience.
The Importance of Evidence-Based Medicine
Ultimately, the New Age movement's teachings, particularly around alternative medicine, can be detrimental when they interfere with evidence-based practices. The criticism of alternative medicine that works as "medicine" highlights the double standards often applied to these practices. Just because something is labeled as "alternative" does not mean it is less valid or effective.
The support for traditional medicine and its rigorous testing should not be undermined by pseudoscientific claims. Instead, people should be encouraged to approach New Age beliefs with a critical and evidence-based mindset. Whether it's the Law of Attraction, antivaxx beliefs, or the snowflake culture, it is crucial to question the validity of these beliefs and seek scientific validation where possible.
