Awkward Experiences as a Mormon Missionary: From Nerve-Racking Moments to Laughs and Learnings

Life as a Mormon missionary, or a “Mormon”, is filled with unique and unforgettable experiences. These range from the nerve-wracking moments to the humorous situations that help build camaraderie among companions. Let’s explore some of the most awkward and humorous experiences shared by a missionary.

Nature's Interruption

During one of our many visits to teach about the gospel, we found ourselves in a particularly awkward situation. We were speaking with a man in a parking lot when some nearby alley cats decided to commence their passionate and vocal mating ritual. Their loud and prolonged activity made it nearly impossible to finish our conversation about Jesus. My basic Spanish skills, limited to religious terms, only served to worsen the situation. Frustrated and embarrassed, I finally had to smile and let my companion wrap up the discussion. As we walked away, stifling our laughter, I hoped the cats enjoyed their intimate moment and it was a memorable one for them.

Unforgettable Meal and Uncomfortable Traditions

My first awkward experience with missionary life involved an unexpected offer of a meal. During a visit, a mother spontaneously offered us tripe from the cow’s stomach. The ambiance was already tense as I was feeling nauseous, and the thought of consuming it was unbearable. Even now, the mere idea of swallowing such a dish has the potential to make me feel queasy. However, the stomach bug I was battling would have made sure any attempt to consume it would be ill-fated. Firmly declining the meal was necessary to prevent a much worse outcome. Her visibly discouraged reaction only emphasized the cross-cultural communication challenges we face as missionaries.

Subtle Disputes in a Small Home

Another memorable experience involved a small home, barely big enough for a bed, where we were frequently caught in the midst of a fight between a young newlywed couple. This opposition often appeared in the midst of our visits, despite both parties trusting us as missionaries. Their lack of trust and growing animosity resulted in frequent disagreements, and it is unlikely they are still together today. The repetition of the Xhosa word “mamela,” meaning “listen,” still resonates within my memory due to the frequency and intensity with which it was used in quick succession.

The Zone Conference Concert

One of the more nerve-wracking moments occurred during a Zone Conference around Christmas time. We were assigned the task of performing the song “What Child Is This,” a choice that initially seemed promising but turned out to be a disaster. Without a piano or chance to practice, we could only run through the song a few times. We were promised an accompanist, but the reality was a train wreck, with the accompanist providing complex and embellished melodies that left us unable to track the rhythm or key. The experience was so embarrassing that I long to forget it. :P

Conclusion

Despite the awkward moments, missionary life is filled with unexpected laughter and unforeseen stories. These experiences, from unexpected natural interruptions to challenging cultural norms, not only humbled us but also created lasting bonds and memories among our companions. Whether it be a cats' passionate love-making or a meal of cow stomach, these experiences are etched into our minds and add a unique flavor to our missionary journeys.
