Are There Any Bad Areas in Istanbul, Turkey?
My 3-week trip to Türkiye in September/October 2022 was awesome. Even though I was mugged twice in Istanbul, no place is entirely safe. It's important to be cautious, as it's not just life-threatening but also concerning to walk alone in empty or overcrowded streets, buses, or metro trains. I had two failed pickpocket attempts by three women, a man, and a getaway car. In Cihangir and Ili, I experienced a similar scenario twice, where surrounding civilians would intentionally cut you off and trip you to create an opportunity for theft. Nevertheless, both attempts failed as I managed to keep my belongings secure.
Crime Rates in Istanbul
Some areas, including Esenyurt, Baclar, Sultanbeyli, Kasernen, ümraniye, and Fikirtepe, have higher crime rates and lack proper infrastructure. I have seen the less frequent buses and generally remote and/or higher parts of the city as areas to avoid. A general rule of thumb is to avoid neighborhoods where buildings look unfinished and have no proper paint on their outer walls as they are areas where locals are less likely to stay.
Famous Crime Ridden Neighborhoods
Some neighborhoods are notorious for crime. For example, Gaziosmanpasa is infamous for harboring anarchists and frequent gun fights. It has been in the news for fatal May 1st protests. Another area to avoid is Karagümrük, known for having a term called 'Karagümrük Mafia.' Other neighborhoods that you should be wary of include Kocaanak, Tarlaba, Beylikdüzü, Gürpinar, Esenyurt, Kutepe, ümraniye, Alay, Bag?lar, Hac??evki, ?fa Mahallesi, Sulukule, Karabayr, Sar?, Aksaray, Mecanakap, Fikirtepe, Kanarya Mahallesi, Dolapdere, Sultan Mahalle, and others mentioned.
Ensuring Your Safety
While there are plenty of dangerous areas, Istanbul still has many safe places, especially the tourist routes. However, it’s crucial to stick to well-lit streets, avoid parking lots, and stay in well-maintained neighborhoods. A map of Istanbul and a guide to the safest neighborhoods can help. Additionally, consider downloading apps like **Safecity** which allow you to report unsafe areas and seek advice from locals.
Conclusion
It’s vital to remain cautious and informed while visiting Istanbul. By avoiding high crime areas, staying aware of your surroundings, and following local advice, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip. Remember, no city is entirely safe, but with the right precautions, you can minimize your risk and maximize your enjoyment.
