Anakins Marriage to Padmé and His Role in Naboo’s Governance
Understanding Anakin's Role in Naboo's Governance
The question of whether Anakin Skywalker becomes king of Naboo upon marrying Padmé Amidala is a common query among Star Wars fans. Contrary to many assumptions, Anakin does not attain any royal title or political power over Naboo in the Star Wars saga. Anakin's role as a Jedi and later as Darth Vader is independent of the governance of Naboo.
Padmé Amidala's Role in Naboo
Padmé Amidala was elected as the Queen of Naboo when she was 14 years old. Her reign was unique, serving both as queen and later as a senator. The title of Queen on Naboo is an elected position, not hereditary. Padmé's term as queen lasted only four years, and before Anakin and Padmé's marriage in Attack of the Clones, she had stepped down from her role as Queen to become a senator.
The Current Queen and Anakin's Marriage
During Anakin and Padmé's marriage in Attack of the Clones, Padmé was no longer the Queen of Naboo. The reigning Queen at that time was Jamillia. The title of Queen on Naboo is held by an elected individual, and Jamillia was the recognized leader of Naboo prior to Padmé stepping down.
Example of Royal Consorts and Title Hierarchy
The relationship between a royal and their consort is not always one of automatic transfer of power. For example, on the planet Alderaan, Queen Breha Organa wields the authority and rule, while her husband, Bail Prestor Organa, is referred to as the Viceroy or Governor of Alderaan. This represents the formal title, even though he is married to the reigning monarch.
Elizabeth II and Her Consort
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, her husband was styled as Prince Philip and Duke of Edinburgh, not as King. This exemplifies that in many monarchies, the consort’s title is separate and does not align with the monarch's reign or lineage. Therefore, Anakin Skywalker, being married to Padmé Amidala – who was no longer the Queen of Naboo – does not assume any royal titles or gain political power over Naboo.
Given the aforementioned context, it is clear that Anakin does not become the King of Naboo when he marries Padmé Amidala. His role remains that of a Jedi, and later, a Sith Lord, with no direct connection to Naboo's political governance.
