Alternative Strategies for King Robert Baratheon: A Reevaluation of the Joust

In the epic universe of A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF) and the associated television series Game of Thrones, King Robert Baratheon faces a daunting challenge during the jousting tournament where his paladin, The Mountain (also known as Ser Gregor Clegane), must face off against the Hound (Ser Sandor Clegane).

Dealing with The Mountain

Assuming the role of King Robert, one might imagine a different approach to addressing the threat posed by The Mountain. While contemporary sensibilities might advocate for The Mountain's execution, in the realm of ASOIAF, the situation demands a more strategic and pragmatic response.

Like King Robert, my decision would rest on the belief that The Mountain's immense strength and nearly indestructible nature make him a formidable ally. Given this, my response to The Mountain's initial retreat would be to command him to stay, emphasizing the importance of his allegiance:

"Ser Gregor! In the name of your knighthood I COMMAND you to come back!"

Despite my best efforts to corral him, The Mountain's refusal would mark the beginning of a chaotic scene. In an attempt to mitigate the situation, I would turn to the common folk:

"Everyone halt the big oaf!"

This command, though slightly ineffective against the powerful Ser Gregor, would rally a small number of peasants who valiantly attempt to intervene, only to meet their fate at The Mountain's hands. The interference of the Hound could then be leveraged to end the situation decisively:

"Ser Sandor arrest or kill your brother whichever the Gods deem just!"

In a well-timed intervention, the Hound would gain the upper hand, fatally stabbing The Mountain in the eye, thus ending the conflict. By this point, the room would erupt into applause and cheers for Sandor Clegane, the Hound, for his loyal service to the kingdom.

Outcome of the Alterative Strategy

Adopting this course of action, the casualty count would be significantly lower. While the Hound would still take action to end the threat, it would be more controlled and with fewer unintended losses among the peasant populace. In the original storyline, the Hound's actions result in the death of 100 peasants. In our hypothetical scenario, the number of casualties would be reduced to just five, a much more humane outcome.

Conclusion

While engaging The Mountain through direct confrontation might seem like a natural response, the realities of ASOIAF dictate a different approach. By leveraging the Hound's loyalty and strategic positioning, we can minimize casualties while still maintaining the integrity of the Righteous Kingdoms. This alternative strategy not only aligns with the thematic burdens and conflicts within the story but also provides a more strategic and responsible resolution to the situation.

The principles of loyalty and strategic thinking in ASOIAF are central to survival and triumph. Recognizing the value of allies and utilizing resources wisely can make all the difference in the outcome of one's endeavors. In the tumultuous world of Westeros, it is often the subtle adjustments that can turn the tide of fate.
