Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sixth Season: Moving to Summer with Marvel's Upcoming Infinity Saga

Recently, ABC announced that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will continue for a sixth season, set to air in the summer of 2019. This move can be attributed to two main reasons: the storyline alignment with the upcoming 'Avengers: Infinity War' movie and the show's declining ratings. Let's explore why S.H.I.E.L.D. remains a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) despite the challenges it has faced.

Why the Move to Summer?

The decision to move Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to summer is strategic. First, after the blockbuster success of Avengers: Infinity War, it's crucial for the upcoming Avengers movie to resolve many of the storylines initiated by the MC. Second, attending to these storylines in summer would capitalize on the popularity of superheroes and the lead-up to the highly anticipated films.

The Journey of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hailing back to 2013, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had a journey of its own, totaling four seasons so far. Each season has been a mix of thrilling adventures and mixed reviews, with the first season being the most controversial. Here is a ranking of the seasons from worst to best according to personal preferences:

Season 1 – Although it laid the groundwork, it may not be considered the best season now. Season 3 – This season has become one of my favorites, guiding the characters to a more powerful and interconnected universe. Season 2 – The introduction of Inhumans added depth to the narrative, but it also faced issues with character development and pacing. Season 4 – With a focus on coming back as a legit agency and the Sokovia Accords, this season added significant weight to the overall plot.

My hope is that the sixth season picks up where it left off and expands the story beyond just Inhumans. It would be a great step to bring more big Superhero names back into play or delve deeper into the Atlanteans.

What Lies Ahead for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

The future of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is uncertain. The show has established itself as a vital part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but as Inhumans premieres as a separate series, it might no longer be the centerpiece. Agent Carter, another original Marvel show from Marvel Studios, is also moving to summer. Meanwhile, Inhumans will focus on the Royal Family and will not rely on the AoS mythology.

Can Inhumans Replace S.H.I.E.L.D.?

There is no clear indication that Marvel's Inhumans will replace Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Inhumans focuses on a specific family, entirely different from what S.H.I.E.L.D. has built. Both shows will continue to tell their unique stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but S.H.I.E.L.D. will remain the primary TV series. Once S.H.I.E.L.D. ends, Marvel may not have another main TV show for a while.
