A Nostalgic Journey Through Bollywood's Ludo 2020: Review and Analysis

As the movie Ludo 2020 began, it evoked a constant sense of nostalgia, reminding viewers of the 2019 superhit movie “Super Deluxe”. While Ludo may not have reached the same height of success, the film certainly retains its charm with its unique elements of screenplay storytelling, chaos, and dark comedy. Ludo marked one of the best Bollywood releases of 2020, showcasing its filmmaking prowess and creative storytelling technique.

Non-Linear Storytelling Approach

A non-linear story is a storytelling technique not commonly used in Bollywood but highly effective when employed skillfully. The film Ludo follows a Pulp Fiction-type narrative approach, beginning with characters already in a chaotic state, which then spirals into a game of chance—the game of Ludo.

Character Introduction and Plot

The movie excels in the editing department with how the characters are introduced by the narrators. This method ensures that the simple plot gradually intertwines as the story progresses. Without such an introduction, the film might have seemed messy to understand multiple characters and their roles in the game.

Acting and Performance

The success of Ludo is no doubt fueled by the stellar performances of its cast. The intertwining plot demands convincing actors who can keep the audience engaged. Each actor contributes to the overall success of the film, and a special mention goes to the performances of Abhishek Bachchan, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, Rajkumar Rao, and Fatima Sheikh.

Sanya Malhotra, a newcomer, impressively matched Aditya Roy Kapoor in terms of acting skills. Rajkumar Rao and Fatima Sheikh delivered standout performances, portraying a "friendzoned" character and a perfect fit for their roles, respectively. Pankaj Tripathi, as usual, showcased unmatched class and subtle brilliance.

Why is the Name of the Movie Ludo?

The film Ludo may have taken viewers back to memories of another film, "Super Deluxe," but the reason for the title Ludo is also highly significant. The game of Ludo itself is a classic board game where only three out of the four players can win, with the fourth ending up as the loser. The movie follows a similar storyline. In the movie, Abhishek Bachchan's character (the red coin) has the least chance of survival and thus loses the game, despite his efforts.

The name Ludo perfectly aligns with the movie's themes and story, indicating the underlying struggle, chaos, and the ultimate loser's journey. The film's creators have put forth a smart and interesting concept, combining narrative techniques, character development, and storyline to create a memorable experience for the viewer.
