Women who drink two beers or more per week were 72% more likely to suffer from psoriasis than women who do not drink any alcohol, according to a new study published online on August 16, and to be published in the December issue of the journal Archives of Dermatology.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “psoriasis is a disease that causes lesions and peeling of the skin. It affects 2-3% of the population and is probably of autoimmune based, meaning that the immune system of individuals attacks their own cells. ”
“The link between alcohol consumption and increased risk of onset or worsening of psoriasis was a hypothesis raised long ago. For example, individuals with psoriasis drink more alcohol than individuals without psoriasis, and alcohol may exacerbate the severity of psoriasis,” report Abrar A. Qureshi, of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, and his colleagues.
The researchers found that regular beer (not light), wine and other alcoholic beverages increases the risk of psoriasis. They believe that the gluten content in barley used for brewing beer could be involved. However, before further research are made, the authors recommend that “women with high risk of psoriasis should avoid drinking more non-light beer.”
