Researchers at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) in Canada have discovered that people who are victims of negative behavior, stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice lose their emotional self-control, as well as their ability to think rationally, to stay focused and have a balanced diet.

The study was originally published online (July 12) in advance of being published in the August print issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Dr. Michael Inzlicht, lecturer in psychology at UTSC, who led the study, said in a press release dated August 10: “Even in cases where a person left the position in which she was the victim of negative stereotypes, negative effects from the attempt to live with this situation remains.”

Michael Inzlicht and Sonia K. Kang, co-authors of the study sought to determine whether “there are negative effects left from the injury” and whether “being perceived as a stereotype has an impact beyond the time the person is perceived as such”, by conducting various studies with groups of people, mostly women, including “a study that examined the damage based on various factors such as ethnicity, religion and age”. The participants were university students, aged 18-20 years,” says Michael Inzlicht.

“People are more likely to be aggressive if they have faced prejudice in a given situation. They are more likely to show a lack of self control. They have difficulty making good decisions, rational decisions. And they are more likely to eat too much unhealthy food,” he says.

Michael Inzlicht continues: “These persistent effects cause harm to people in a very real way, and put them at a disadvantage. Even when people do not suffer from negative behavior, they continue to bear this burden that has a negative impact on their lives.”
